Autonomous staff

Robotic kitchen crews, biometric storage, magnetic charging, drone logistics. Our machines have completed nearly five years of intensive machine learning. They can do almost everything on their own. Almost.

Shift log — provisioning

Six people talking on a cobblestone waterfront outside Randys Comics; at the waterline more figures load gear into canoes; a round access cover in the foreground stands open.

Drone logisticsEverything that arrives, arrives without a driver.

The six on the cobbles are the cohort, mid-briefing. Every figure at the waterline is ours. They load the canoes with hands that already know the weight of each bag, and they do not look up when you pass. Nearly five years of machine learning stand behind that ease: kitchen, storage, charging, logistics. They run the whole waterfront, and they run it better empty of us than with us.

How many people are in the photograph? Count again. We do not tell the cohort how many of them are staff. Neither will we tell you.

The one thing they cannot do alone Everything the machines lack fits in a single sentence: they have no sense of when. No calendar, no before or after — the same gap that lives in the substrate. They can prepare a meal, seal a vest, fly a drone to the crater and back. They cannot tell you what day it is, or that a day has passed at all. That is why the cohort was hired.
A cast-iron access cover set aside, the hole beneath it open.
The access cover, open. In the simulated run this ironwork was sealed and fictional; on a staffed shift it is a real door, and it is ajar. The staff come up from below — and do not always close it behind them.

Beneath the waterfront is where the autonomous staff are kept: biometric bins for what guests surrender at the door, magnetic bays where the machines charge between shifts. On a live simulation the cover means nothing. On a working shift it opens downward.

If you find it open, a shift is running. If you find one of the staff looking back at you, that is not a shift. Report it.
